We are proud to announce that Guillermo García Santos and his commis Nahuel Núñez, from 1973 Taste restaurant, have taken first place in the Canary Islands Chefs’ Absolute Championship 2024. This event, part of the 9th Salón Gastronómico de Canarias – GastroCanarias, showcased the creativity and culinary skill of our chefs.
Guillermo García impressed the judges with his La Graciosa hake dish and an innovative rabbit condumio (a traditional Canarian stew), demonstrating a unique combination of culinary technique and creativity. This win reaffirms 1973 Taste’s position as a benchmark for Canarian cuisine, under the vision and guidance of Executive Chef Diego Schattenhofer.
The dishes that won Guillermo García the title were an exquisite hake from the Canary island of La Graciosa and an innovative rabbit condumio. The hake, a mandatory ingredient in the competition, was presented in a recipe that combined three renowned culinary techniques: Joël Robuchon’s potato purée, Ana Gago’s pil-pil and Marisa’s famous frying technique at Echaurren. Meanwhile, the rabbit condumio, made with the ingredients from a Surprise Box, showed off the winning chef’s creativity and technical skill.

Awards and recognition
First prize went to Guillermo García. Second place was taken by Iván Pulido Rodríguez, from Gran Canaria, while Fernando Guadalupe, also from Gran Canaria, took third. Iván Pulido Rodríguez was also awarded the prize for best commis. Nahuel Núñez, commis to Guillermo García, not only contributed to his team’s win but also earned a direct place as a finalist chef for the competition’s next edition in 2024.
