Los Cristianos surrenders to the flavour of the sea at a Fish Fair with a Michelin star and pure tradition
In El Digital Sur, 19 August 2026.
El Digital Sur has covered the XII Los Cristianos Fish Fair and wanted to highlight the showcooking that Diego Schattenhofer will share with the local fishermen. It pleases us especially because this is not the first time we have been invited onto the quay: we already cooked at the 2024 edition. And we return with the same enthusiasm, that of working with fish fresh off the boat and alongside those who brought it in.
The event takes place on Saturday 29 August 2026, from five in the afternoon until almost midnight, spread between the Plaza de la Pescadora and the Muelle Viejo. It is a tribute to local artisanal fishing and to those who know these waters best, so the programme does not stop at the stove: the Cofradía de Pescadores de Nuestra Señora de Las Mercedes opens its exhibition, children’s workshops fill the afternoon and, as the sun sets, folklore and music take over. The presenter Isabel Pérez Navarro hosts the day.
The outlet introduces Diego as “the acclaimed executive chef of the restaurant Taste 1973, holder of a Michelin star” and places the main event as evening falls: “The highlight of the day will take place from 19:00, when the stoves of the Muelle Viejo light up to welcome Diego Schattenhofer”. We will cook until nine, shoulder to shoulder with the fishermen and with whatever they themselves brought in that day, “the fresh catches of the local fishermen”. There is no better larder nor better school: the produce arrives at its peak and the recipe is learnt by talking with those who have fished all their lives. It is the same curiosity that has led us to research the maturation of fish in Tenerife.
From 21:30, the Muelle Viejo becomes a great open-air dining hall with free tastings of seafarers’ recipes prepared by the fishermen of Los Cristianos themselves. This twelfth edition is driven by the Department of Economic Promotion of the Ayuntamiento de Arona, backed by the Cofradía de Pescadores de Las Mercedes and funded by the Gobierno de Canarias and the European Union. For us, it is also a home event: Taste 1973 is at the Hotel Villa Cortés, in Playa de Las Américas, within the same municipality of Arona.
We are glad to return to Los Cristianos and to be part of a celebration that honours the trade of those who fish our coasts, which is also one of the roots of Canarian gastronomy. We hope the public enjoys it as much as we enjoy cooking and talking by the sea.
