By the COPE Tenerife editorial team, in the “Gastronomía con Isabel Pérez” section, 16 October 2025.

COPE Tenerife devoted a piece to the recognition given to Diego Schattenhofer as best hotel chef at the Culinary Hotel Awards. It is news we celebrate and share with everyone who is part of Taste 1973, because an award like this is never collected alone.

The written body of the piece is limited to the headline and the subheading, which sums it up like this: “The cook leading Taste1973 at the Hotel Villa Cortés (Arona) received the award as part of the ‘Culinary Hotel Awards’.” The rest is audio: just over eight minutes that can be listened to on the station’s website.

The trophy Diego collected bears the awards’ logo and the words “Mejor Chef”, with the year 2025; COPE reports it as the award for best hotel chef. We are glad to see awards looking towards hotel kitchens, which are not always in the spotlight.

Taste 1973 opened in January 2019 at the Hotel Villa Cortés, a five-star hotel in Playa de Las Américas, in Arona. Since then, Diego Schattenhofer, executive chef of the hotel for over a decade and resident in Tenerife for over twenty years, has held to a very specific line of work: matured Canarian goat, the islands’ cheeses and local produce, with the collaboration of the ICIA and other institutions. It is also the work behind the other awards the house has gone on receiving.

The story has had a follow-up. On 7 September 2026 we announced that Taste 1973 had been nominated for Best Km 0 Cuisine at the Culinary Hotel Awards 2026: “A recognition that highlights our commitment to local produce, the islands’ producers and a cuisine deeply connected to the Canarian territory.” The five nominees in that category are Muxgo, Taste 1973, Dos Naifes, El Cenador and Cráter. Good company for a nomination that means a great deal to us.
